According to a recent study by McKinsey & Company, energy consumption in the data center doubled between 2000-2006, a trend that is likely to continue. Experts predict that if left unchecked, data center energy costs will approach nearly 20 percent of overall data center OPEX within the next five years. In this proposed panel session, a moderated group of panelists representing end-users, technology vendors and the analyst community will offer their unique perspectives and insights into the energy challenges plaguing today''s data centers. Panelist will discuss strategies, technologies and best practices for managing the financial and environmental impact of rising energy consumption; share their vision for the next-generation "green" data center; and examine the key steps along the way.
As a result of participating in this session, attendees will be able to:
- Assess the current state of energy consumption in the data center and the environmental and economic implications of not implementing green strategies and practices
- Develop strategies, technologies and energy management best practices which can potentially deliver organizations a greater than 50 percent reduction in energy costs
- Identify requirements for the next-generation data center and what end-users are looking for from storage products/vendors and how to compare them for "greeness"
